If you had asked Sophia Bush one year ago today if she thought she’d ever run a marathon, the star would probably tell you no. “I’ve had asthma all my life,” she says. “When I first started training for this, I hadn’t run a mile since junior high.” Now she’s run a 5k, and is the new face of the San Francisco Marathon. “San Francisco is the epitome for me,” Bush says. “People are so active, and you can understand why when you see the Bay area, and all the nature. People care a lot about the environment there.” So Bush, 28, partnered with the Nature Conservancy to become a member of Team Nature Conservancy and will be running in the marathon on July 31st. Here’s what the star had to say about training for a marathon.
Sophia Bush’s Top 5 Tips on Running a Marathon
1. Take an off day. “I wish someone had told me how important off days are in between running,” Bush says. “When I started training, I just started running every day, which you shouldn’t do. I learned that lesson the hard way by getting a stress fracture.”
2. Put in a low-impact workout on your off-days. “Your body needs a balance,” Bush says. “All the sudden high-impact stress can really take a toll on your body. So if you still want to be active and get in a good workout, go to a yoga class or pilates class, or get in some strength and conditioning.” To stay fit when she’s not running, Sophia surfs, does yoga, and walks her dogs.
3. Get a program guide. “There’s this great app for the iPhone that’s called Get Running, and it provides awesome weekly training sessions,” Bush says. “It’s got this woman’s voice, and she’s got a nice British accent, and she’ll interject and say, ‘now you’re about to start a run for three miles,’ or ‘you’re halfway there, carry on.’ I just love her!” Need motivation? There’s an app for that! Check these cool healthy living apps and get on track to get fit.
4. Put together a playlist of your favorite music. “You’ve got to put together a mix-tape of all your favorite music,” Bush says. “When I hear Florence and the Machine sing, “run fast for your mother…” on “Dog Days,” I can just listen to that song over and over.’”
5. Stay in bed— sometimes.”Your body tells you what it needs, and if you sleep past your alarm on a Saturday morning, it’s probably because you need the sleep,” Bush says. “Again, it’s all about balance. If I spend a Saturday being lazy and curled up on the couch with my dogs, I’ll just make sure to get out and be active on Sunday.”
Sophia Bush covers ‘Zooey‘ June/July 2011. The magazine comes with a special issue entitled “Empowerment” and Sophia seems to be the perfect choice as she’s one true fighter. In the interview, the lovely actress talks about her passion for activism and the power to make changes, proving she’s not just another Hollywood beautiful face, but also a smart woman who fights for humanity, environment and art.
Sophia Bush is the new cover girl of ‘Zooey‘, for the magazine’s June/July special issue titled “Empowerment”. The 28-year-old actress proves in the interview that she’s not just a sex symbol, but also an intelligent, powerful woman who wants to make a difference by getting involved in charitable works. Sophia is a woman to look up to, not only when it comes to style and beauty, but mostly for her great fighter character. The ‘One Tree Hill‘ star told the magazine that her activist qualities started to develop since she was a child, saying that she loved to do community service at an elementary age.
“It’s funny. As a kid, I asked my mom if I could start a beach clean up on Saturdays with my friends. She said, ‘Well, Sweetheart, I don’t think many six-year-olds are going to want to go to the beach and pick up trash on Saturday.’ But, I was very gung ho about the whole thing. Causes and social issues have always really registered with me,” Sophia said in the cover story.
Besides, the gorgeous actress reveals in the interview with ‘Zooey‘ that she has always been aware of the fact that one must do the right thing despite all obstacles and difficulties. “I think I’ve always had a very clear idea of what’s right and wrong. And a very clear sense that we should always try to do the right thing, even when it’s not the easy thing. It’s something that I think baffled my parents at moments, but they’ve been really supportive, too. They’ve given me an exceptional education, from the time that I was a little girl,” Sophia said.
Even though she admits that the media have known a huge blooming in the past years, Sophia sadly realizes that the younger generation is mostly interested in TMZ rather than CNN. “I realized there’s such a proliferation of media, and when you look at the numbers, you see that more young people check TMZ every day than read CNN; that, to me, is unfortunate, and that’s something that I want to change,” the young actress confessed.
Sophia currently portrays Brooke Davis in the CW series ‘One Tree Hill“. Speaking about her role, the actress says that, “In the beginning, there was a lot about Brooke that really bothered me. There were a lot of things that she did that really upset me as far as examples that she set for young women“.
